Future-Ready E-Buses: Ashok Leyland’s Rs 1000 Crore Investment in UP Greenfield Plant

Ashok Leyland, a leading company of the Hinduja Group, has recently announced a partnership with the Uttar Pradesh Government to establish a greenfield plant for the production of electric buses. This strategic move involves an investment of Rs1000 crore over the next few years, marking the company’s first venture in the state.

The manufacturing facility, which will be Ashok Leyland’s seventh in India, is initially designed to manufacture 2500 buses annually. However, it has the potential to increase its production capacity to 5000 vehicles per year within the next decade. This expansion is expected to address the growing demand for electric and other types of buses in the near future.

“We are thrilled to enter the vibrant state of Uttar Pradesh, and we are confident that this new facility will make a positive contribution to our shared goals of creating employment opportunities and promoting sustainable transportation in India,” said Dheeraj Hinduja, Executive Chairman of Ashok Leyland.

As part of this partnership, Ashok Leyland will primarily focus on manufacturing electric buses. However, the company will also have the flexibility to assemble vehicles powered by conventional and emerging alternative fuels. This enables the company to cater to a wider range of customer preferences.

Under the agreement, the Government of Uttar Pradesh has committed to supporting the sale of electric buses annually for its own fleet and other stakeholders over the next five years. This will be facilitated through Switch Mobility, a subsidiary of Ashok Leyland. Nand Gopal Gupta, Minister for Industrial Development, Export Promotion, NRI, and Investment Promotion, Government of Uttar Pradesh, highlighted the government’s commitment to this initiative.

“Ashok Leyland’s mission to achieve Net Zero by the year 2048 has driven the establishment of this plant in Uttar Pradesh,” explained Shenu Agarwal, MD & CEO of Ashok Leyland. He also praised Uttar Pradesh as being one of the largest and most dynamic states in the country, with a strong commitment to environmental sustainability.
