Denny Bromley’s Hot Rod Ford Model T: A Century Old Classic
When Denny Bromley’s hot rod Ford drives by, it looks like a big yellow telephone booth on wheels. But in reality, it’s a 100-year-old Ford Model T doctor’s coupe that Denny has modified to be his daily driver during the summer months. Denny, a member of the Coasters Car Club, regularly cruises his Chevy powered 1923 Ford coupe along Highway 101 on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast.
Bromley’s love for hot rods dates back to his teenage years in West Vancouver, where he was captivated by the cut-down roadsters and coupes of the 1930s. At the age of 14, he discovered his dream car – a 1928 Ford Model A roadster – in the garage of the last house on his paper route. With some financial assistance from his parents, he purchased the car for $35 and towed it home.
However, his plans to transform the roadster into a hot rod were derailed when the body was accidentally damaged while being taken apart for body work. Ultimately, the car ended up in the landfill. Undeterred, Denny set his sights on a channeled Ford Model A coupe with a hot flathead V8 engine that an older teenager in his neighborhood was selling for $200. Despite strategically offering his dad a ride to convince him to let him buy it, Denny’s plan failed when the passenger door flew open during a sharp left turn, leading his father to deem the car unsafe.
Seeking a compromise, Denny’s parents allowed him to contribute towards insurance and maintenance for his mother’s 1953 Studebaker. However, unsatisfied with this four-door sedan, Denny took the car to a customizer in Seattle, where it was quickly modified to give it a sleeker and more customized look. Despite his parents’ initial surprise and disapproval, Denny’s passion for hot rods continued to burn.
Twenty years ago, Denny finally acquired the 1923 Ford Model T doctor’s coupe, which was partially built into a hot rod with a Chevy V8 engine. He began the process of transforming it into his dream hot rod, sending the body to a shop for reworking and having a local hot rod builder install new suspension and reengineer the running gear for enhanced safety and performance. Today, Denny’s century-old car wows spectators at car shows on the west coast and brings smiles to all those who see it on the road.
