Empowering Los Angeles Youth: Uniting for Global Climate Action at the Youth Rally

Hundreds of young Angelenos took to the streets to join a Global Climate Strike, a worldwide day of action against climate inaction. The Youth Climate Strike Los Angeles organized the event, attracting people from across the city and L.A. County to gather at L.A. City Hall. The purpose of the rally was to protest the lack of action in addressing the climate crisis and saving lives.

Prior to the rally, a group of student climate activists addressed the City Council. Some members gave public comments while others held a climate clock, symbolizing the urgent need to address the climate crisis. Simon Aaron, a senior at Geffen Academy and a member of the Youth Climate Strike L.A., emphasized the severity of the climate crisis and its impact on Los Angeles, including heat waves, droughts, and deadly air pollution. Aaron urged the Council to take their demands seriously.

Richie Torres, another member of the Youth Climate Strike L.A., expressed the urgency of the climate crisis and the need for immediate action. He emphasized that the Earth is our only home and should be treated as such. Meredith Rose, a mom, community college teacher, and ordinary citizen, also voiced her support for the youth activists and called on city leaders to declare a climate emergency.

After their comments, the group left the Council Chambers to join the rest of their peers. Aaron acknowledged the efforts made by City Council members, but emphasized that more needs to be done. He believes that the crisis is not being taken as seriously as it should be.

Council President Paul Krekorian’s office highlighted the ongoing debate in the Energy and Environment Committee regarding setbacks for oil wells. Krekorian supports making oil and gas extraction a nonconforming use throughout the city. The statement from Krekorian’s office acknowledged the concerns raised by the activists and expressed hope for continued pressure on all levels of government to take action.

Los Angeles is already moving towards carbon-free electricity and aims to achieve 100% carbon-free electrical generation by 2035 through the LA100 plan. The city is also nearing the end of residential oil and gas drilling, with 130 years of drilling coming to an end.

The Youth Climate Strike members have been actively engaging with Council members and city departments to work on climate issues. They remain focused on collaborating with L.A. County supervisors, the Department of Water and Power, and the Unified School District. Aaron mentioned their partnership with the Sunrise Movement to launch a “Green New Deal” for schools campaign.

The Youth Climate Strike L.A. aims to be heard and have their demands met by L.A. City leaders, L.A. County, LAUSD, and LADWP. The first Global Climate Strike in 2019, inspired by Greta Thunberg, sparked a global movement led by youth activists. Their demands center around urging elected officials to take immediate action on the climate crisis, raising awareness about climate change, and reducing dependence on oil. The group wants to build power within social movements and mobilize L.A. for climate action.

In light of record-breaking temperatures this summer, which resulted in extreme weather events, including wildfires and flooding, NASA scientists emphasize the urgent need to address climate change. They highlight the consequences of inaction and emphasize the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate the effects of climate change.
