August Jobless Rate Report: County Record Unemployment at 5.4%

Losses in the agricultural, construction, and other sectors of the regional economy resulted in a slight increase in Riverside County’s unemployment rate last month, according to data released by the California Employment Development Department on Friday.

Based on preliminary EDD estimates, the countywide jobless rate in August was 5.4%, compared to 5% in July.

Figures show that the August rate was 1 full percentage point higher than the rate from a year ago, which was 4.4%.

Last month, there were an estimated 61,800 county residents who were unemployed, while 1,081,300 were employed, according to EDD.

In August, Mecca had the highest unemployment rate in the county at 13.1%, followed by Coachella at 11.4%, Cherry Valley at 9.7%, Rancho Mirage at 7.7%, and East Hemet at 7.4%.

The combined unemployment rate for Riverside and San Bernardino counties, known as the Inland Empire, was 5.3% in August, up from 4.9% in July, according to the data.

Data for both counties showed that the agricultural sector had the largest decline in payrolls, losing 1,700 positions.

Additional job losses were seen in the construction, financial services, information technology, and hospitality sectors, amounting to a total of about 2,000 jobs lost, as reported by the data. Miscellaneous unclassified industries also reduced payrolls by 600, according to the EDD.

On the other hand, payrolls increased in the health services, manufacturing, professional business services, public, and transportation sectors, adding a total of 11,400 jobs in August, according to the figures.

The mining sector remained unchanged.

Data shows that the statewide non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in August was 5.1%.
