Google co-founder Sergey Brin and his wife, Nicole Shanahan, have quietly finalized their divorce nearly a year after rumors of Shanahan’s alleged affair with Elon Musk, a close friend of Brin. According to court records obtained by Insider, a Santa Clara County Superior Court judge approved the divorce on May 26. Brin, who is worth an estimated $118 billion and is currently the ninth richest person in the world, filed for divorce in January 2022, citing “irreconcilable differences” following the alleged affair with Musk.
Court records reveal that Brin and Shanahan, who first met at a yoga retreat three years before getting married in 2018, have a 4-year-old daughter together. The couple had signed a prenuptial agreement that dictated confidential arbitration in the event of a divorce, including matters such as spousal support. The exact amount of child support was not specified in the court papers, but it was noted that it would be “non-guideline,” meaning it was agreed upon by Brin and Shanahan outside of the standard calculations based on income and timeshare.
Shanahan, who works as a lawyer for the Bay Area nonprofit Bia-Echo Foundation, did not contest the divorce but did ask for spousal support. The details of the divorce settlement, including spousal support, lawyer fees, and division of assets, were also handled in confidential arbitration.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported in July 2022 that Brin’s friendship with Musk had been strained after he discovered the alleged affair between Musk and Shanahan. Musk has denied the affair and reportedly sought forgiveness from Brin. Despite the rumors of a feud, Musk shared a selfie with Brin last year to dispel any tension between them.
Shanahan, an attorney and founder of a Bay Area nonprofit, met Brin at a yoga retreat in 2015. Neither Brin nor Shanahan have commented on the alleged affair or the divorce.
