The Troubling Encounter of a Rising Star With Drug Cartels

Peso Pluma, a 24-year-old Mexican singer, is rapidly gaining prominence in the US music industry. Recently, he performed at the MTV awards show, has a whopping 50 million monthly listeners on Spotify, and has made appearances at Coachella and on Jimmy Fallon’s show, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. In short, he is one of the most popular singers in the world right now. However, there’s a significant problem he’s facing – a drug cartel is threatening to take his life. Here’s what’s happening:

  • Threats: Large banners have been spotted in Tijuana, warning Pluma to cancel his upcoming show in the city next month. One of these banners, signed by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, reads, “it will be your last show due to your disrespect and loose tongue,” according to USA Today.
  • His offense: Pluma’s music often glorifies drug traffickers, particularly Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the founder of the Sinaloa cartel, and his henchmen, according to the Los Angeles Times. The Jalisco cartel, which put up the threatening banners, is Sinaloa’s main rival in Tijuana and other areas. In his hit song “Siempre Pendientes,” or “Always Ready,” Pluma sings about a foot soldier for El Chapo.
