Sept. 14 (UPI) — A small town in Illinois is abuzz with curiosity as authorities attempt to identify a puzzling white or translucent object spotted soaring in broad daylight.
Prophetstown Police Chief Bruce Franks, who was off-duty at the time, received a call from an employee at Todd’s Tire and Auto, where a group of people had gathered to witness the enigmatic aerial spectacle.
According to witnesses, this enigma took the form of a white or translucent balloon attached to a box structure, with some suggesting the presence of red lighting.
The object remained stationary in the sky for an extended period, adding to the intrigue surrounding it.
Officer Boyd Van Dellen confirmed that local law enforcement is still grappling with the mysterious object’s identification, dismissing speculations about extraterrestrial origins or Chinese affiliation.
The National Weather Service denied launching any balloons recently in the area. However, Van Dellen mentioned that the organization proposed the possibility of a research balloon launched by another entity.
As a precautionary measure, the local airport was notified about the unidentified object to ensure the safety of air traffic in the vicinity.
In a similar incident in early April, Phoenix experienced a wave of speculation regarding foreign surveillance or UFO activity due to the presence of teardrop-shaped balloons. However, these objects were later determined to be Thunderhead weather balloons belonging to the company Aerostar.
