A 28-year-old man suspected of evading sheriff’s deputies in a stolen car, speeding through Moreno Valley until the vehicle became disabled, and then fleeing and hiding in someone’s house, is currently being held on $150,000 bail.
Johnny Isaac Zuniga, a resident of Perris, was arrested and booked into the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside on Wednesday. He faces charges of felony evading, possession of a stolen vehicle, home invasion, and hit-and-run resulting in property damage.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday when patrol deputies traveling west on Sunnymead Boulevard, near Indian Avenue, spotted a car that had been reported stolen from Menifee.
“Deputies tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to yield, resulting in a pursuit,” stated the sheriff’s department.
The chase continued southbound for approximately four miles, until the stolen car ran over a spike strip deployed by deputies. This caused Zuniga to lose control of the vehicle and crash, as reported by sheriff’s officials.
Zuniga then fled from the car and ran towards the Campanilia Fortuna Estates, where he disappeared from sight, according to investigators.
Deputies established a perimeter and conducted a search of all nearby residential streets. Roughly three hours later, they were alerted by community members who stated that Zuniga was hiding in their residence, the sheriff’s department disclosed.
SWAT team members were dispatched to the location where they ordered the suspect to surrender, resulting in his arrest without further incident.
No injuries were reported.
Background information on Zuniga is currently unavailable.
