Urgent Evacuation: Whittier Area Residents Forced Out Overnight due to Dangerous Gas Leak

An early-morning natural gas leak caused the evacuation of approximately 75 people from around 24 homes in an unincorporated area near Whittier. The evacuation lasted for nearly seven hours.

The leak was detected by Southern California Gas Co. around 1:30 a.m. in the 7500 block of Vicki Drive. Utility spokeswoman Brittany Paul confirmed the leak.

Residents in the affected area were quickly evacuated with the help of law enforcement officers and neighbors, who went door-to-door to ensure everyone’s safety. Luckily, no injuries were reported.

Representatives from Southern California Gas Co. and Los Angeles County Fire Department were dispatched to the area to investigate and address the situation.

After investigation, it was determined that the gas leak originated from a three-inch gas line. SoCalGas crews are currently on-site completing the necessary repairs and controlling the gas flow. They are also prepared to restore gas services once the repairs are finished,” Paul stated.

The evacuation affected approximately 24 to 32 homes. The Red Cross established an evacuation center at Phelan Language Academy on Culley Ave.

The gas leak was successfully capped by SoCalGas around 8 a.m., allowing residents to return to their homes. However, ongoing repair work is being conducted on the ruptured three-inch gas line.

“Restoring services to customers involves a series of necessary steps,” Paul explained. “During the restoration process, an adult must be present to allow for an in-home safety check.”
