Coleen Garcia opens up about managing her child’s screen time and overcoming ‘mom guilt’

Actress Coleen Garcia is relishing her role as a mother to her 3-year-old son, Amari, whom she shares with her husband, Billy Crawford. She finds immense joy in witnessing her son grow, develop his personality, and acquire new skills, overshadowing any feelings of inadequacy. During the launch of a milk formula in a Quezon City mall, Coleen admitted that being a parent is an exciting and overwhelming journey, with the biggest challenge being mom guilt. She believes this guilt is rooted in insecurities and emphasizes the importance of self-encouragement and a strong support system.

The term “mom guilt” refers to the guilt and shame experienced by mothers who feel they are falling short of their own or others’ expectations as parents. Coleen highlights the positive aspects, victories, and silver linings of motherhood, encouraging others to confront this guilt and break its cycle. She wants to set a good example for her child and believes that facing motherhood head-on is crucial to prevent passing on these negative feelings to the next generation.

At the Enfagrow event, specialists on the panel advised that children aged 2 years and older should have limited access to gadgets for only an hour daily, ideally three hours on weekends. Coleen, as a parent, acknowledges this recommendation but emphasizes the importance of choosing appropriate content for her child. She believes that technology is not inherently negative and can be beneficial when used responsibly. However, she still prioritizes monitoring and being informed about what Amari watches.

As a hands-on mom, Coleen ensures that their family engages in various activities when they travel together. For instance, since Amari loves trains and buses, they explored Paris using public transportation. Coleen believes that exposing her child to different places, people, and situations, including mundane tasks like washing dishes, helps him develop familiarity and adaptability over time. She even allows Amari to brush his teeth first, ensuring his independence before stepping in to ensure thorough cleaning.

Coleen acknowledges that there is no rulebook for parenting and that it’s all about discovering what works best along the way. She emphasizes giving children respect as individuals and encouraging them to ask questions, understand rules, and process their emotions.
