High-Stakes Trial Commences: Suspect Faces Charges for Murrieta Park Shooting, Inflicting Severe Injury

The trial of a 20-year-old man accused of shooting a marijuana dealer in a Murrieta park and attempting to shoot three others during a drug-related confrontation began Wednesday with prosecution testimony.

Charged with four counts each of attempted murder and firearm assault, as well as one count each of shooting at an occupied vehicle and robbery, and sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations, Leon Manh Boswell of Murrieta is on trial. His two alleged accomplices, identified only as teenage boys, are facing charges in juvenile court.

Opening statements were delivered by the prosecution and defense on Tuesday, and witnesses were called by the prosecution on Wednesday. The trial is expected to continue through the middle of next week.

The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office stated in a trial brief that Boswell and the teens went to Alta Murrieta Sports Park for an alleged marijuana sale in the predawn hours of September 14, 2021.

The seller, along with three friends, parked in a BMW to wait for the buyer, one of the teens connected with Boswell. During a confrontation, the drugs were snatched, and the seller attempted to chase after the thief.

According to the trial brief, the people in the BMW observed a blue laser pointing and scanning over them and the car, and shots were fired in their direction. The marijuana seller heard the shooter screaming that he was going to kill him and turned to flee the park.

Boswell was later identified as the alleged gunman and is accused of firing about eight rounds from a 9mm handgun, with one bullet striking the marijuana seller in the buttocks. The BMW was also hit by several bullets, and its occupants fled the scene, leaving their wounded friend behind.

Boswell then allegedly robbed the victim of $13 in cash and a bank card. Patrol officers arrived at the park and found the wounded man, as well as multiple 9mm bullet casings. Boswell was identified as the alleged shooter, and a search warrant was served at his residence, where four firearms, including a 9mm ghost gun with a blue laser, were found.

Boswell was arrested on September 14, 2021, without incident, along with the two teenage accomplices. He has no prior felony convictions in Riverside County.
