Several hours into playing the highly anticipated sci-fi role-playing game, Starfield, by Bethesda, I was blown away by the vastness of its universe. As I explored the in-game map, I discovered a desolate moon and its dwarfed planet nearby. Zooming out further, I witnessed the presence of seven other planets in the solar system, each with its own moons, space stations, and satellites. The star map revealed dozens of systems, each with countless locations waiting to be explored. With its tightly scripted and densely featured world, Starfield offered a truly mind-boggling experience.

In Starfield, there is an abundance of everything: locations, organizations, acronyms, accents, and even vacuum-packed food. As a new recruit for Argos Extractors, an upstart mining company, players have access to the Settled Systems and their own spaceship to embark on a journey of discovery. The game presents a thrilling proposition with a vast universe that offers endless opportunities and multiple solutions to every problem.

The story begins when a mysterious metal triggers a strange journey through the player’s subconscious. After an episode of unconsciousness, players find themselves on a moon, eager to uncover the secrets behind the metal. The enigmatic group known as Constellation holds the key to the answers players seek, along with numerous other exciting prospects.

As players navigate the cosmic mystery, they will encounter frontier towns reminiscent of the beloved Firefly universe, gleaming metropolises that showcase the potential of interstellar capitalism, and desolate rocks that serve as a reminder of the vastness of space.

A dizzying proposition: ‘Starfield’

Although the universe in Starfield is vast, it is far from being a lonely one. From cowboys to theologians, robots to entrepreneurs, the game introduces various potential companions in its opening hours. Human and alien creatures populate the towns, outposts, and wilderness, offering opportunities for friendship, romance, rivalry, and employment. Each character possesses unique skills, information, and perspectives to share.

However, amidst the grandeur, there are some inevitable flaws. During my initial gameplay, I encountered several crashes and an audio glitch during a fight scene. Background dialogue frequently overshadowed important story dialogue, and the larger-scale maps lacked detail. Additionally, due to the vastness of space exploration, players spent a significant amount of time navigating menus and waiting for loading screens to travel between planets.

As one of your companions remarks, “Moving forward sometimes means fumbling around in the dark.” This philosophy perfectly embodies the essence of Starfield—an ambitious game that takes both small steps and occasional setbacks in pursuit of greatness.

‘Starfield’ is now available on PC and Xbox Series X/S
