Celebrity chef Rick Stein faces criticism for charging £2 for condiments at his renowned fish restaurant in Cornwall.
Stein’s Fish & Chips, located in Padstow, includes gravies, curry sauces, and aioli in their list of chargeable condiments.
Unhappy customers took to TripAdvisor to express their disappointment with the additional charges.
The spokesperson for Stein’s restaurant group, operating 10 establishments across the UK, justified the decision by attributing it to the rising costs in the industry.
In an interview with the BBC, the spokesperson explained, “Our team of chefs in Padstow meticulously prepare these condiments according to Rick Stein’s unique recipes.”
“Inflation in the food industry, combined with escalating energy costs and higher wages, has significantly impacted our production expenses. We, like many others, reluctantly passed on some of these costs to our customers.”
The restaurant, offering picturesque views of the Camel Estuary, prices their signature haddock or cod and chips at £16.95.
Critiques about the steep prices at Stein’s Fish & Chips surfaced amidst positive reviews on TripAdvisor.
One reviewer expressed disappointment, stating, “The haddock was amazing, but I was let down by the serving of frozen chips and the exorbitant £2 charge for a minuscule pot of mushy peas.”
Another dissatisfied customer in April remarked, “Our meal was very disappointing. To our surprise, we were charged an additional £2 for a tiny pot of mushy peas, as well as for tartar sauce and curry sauce. Unfortunately, we won’t be coming back!”
Despite a slight slowdown in the rate of food price inflation, high grocery prices remain a significant concern for households, rivaling the worries about energy bills, as revealed by research conducted in August.
Data from the British Retail Consortium indicates that food inflation dropped from 13.4% in July to 11.5% in August.
Global economies and UK households alike have faced financial strain due to steep price increases across various commodities, especially food, heavily impacted by supply chain disruptions following the easing of Covid-related restrictions.
Prices soared as supply chains struggled to keep up with the surging demand post-lockdown.
