Sept. 13 (UPI) — In a bizarre incident, a California woman returned home in the early hours of Wednesday, only to find a bear had broken into her house and rummaged through her refrigerator.
Chelsea Mapanda, a resident of Sierra Madre, was shocked to see the side door of her house open upon arrival. Suspecting something was amiss, she peered through the window and discovered that the fridge was open and food was scattered all over the floor. Fearing the worst, she immediately dialed 911.
“As soon as I saw the mess in my kitchen, I knew a bear had made its way into my house. We had been alerted to the presence of a bear in the area,” Mapanda told KTLA-TV.
According to Mapanda, the bear likely indulged in the fresh honey and mangoes she had recently purchased.
The Sierra Madre Police Department promptly responded to the 911 call at around 2 a.m. and confirmed that indeed a bear had made its way inside the house.
The authorities cordoned off the area and stood guard with Mapanda outside the premises until the California Department of Fish and Wildlife arrived to assist with the situation.
“It’s quite an ‘exciting’ home invasion, and it definitely adds to our anniversary story. I thrive in chaotic situations, so this bizarre incident suits me,” Mapanda told KCAL-TV.
Fortunately, the bear eventually left the house before wildlife officers arrived at the scene. However, residents were still advised to exercise caution and avoid the area until authorities confirm that the bear has left the neighborhood.
