NEW YORK >> Former President Barack Obama congratulated Coco Gauff on her U.S. Open title on Saturday, just days after attending her remarkable comeback during the tournament.
Following Gauff’s incredible victory over Aryna Sabalenka with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, countless messages flooded the social media platform, previously known as Twitter, to celebrate the 19-year-old American’s first-ever Grand Slam title.
“We are immensely proud of your achievements both on and off the court, and we have no doubt that the best is yet to come,” Barack Obama expressed.
During the opening night at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Obama and his wife, Michelle, witnessed Gauff’s stunning performance as she defeated Laura Siegemund with a score of 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Following the match, they had the opportunity to meet with Gauff. This memorable event was part of the celebration commemorating the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Open as the first sporting event to offer equal prize money to both female and male champions, which included a tribute to Billie Jean King.
Michelle Obama also shared her congratulations alongside a picture from their meeting, while Clinton expressed his optimism, stating, “The future of American tennis looks bright.”

Gauff expressed her gratitude to Billie Jean King for her pivotal role in the fight for equal prize money as she accepted her $3 million winner’s prize. King responded to a video tweet capturing the moment, saying, “This generation is living the dream of the Original 9,” referring to herself and the other women who signed $1 contracts to initiate a women’s professional circuit in 1970.
Basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson also sent his congratulations to Gauff and praised her parents, stating, “Corey and Candi, they’ve done an outstanding job!”
