A relative of Yolanda Saldivar, the convicted killer of pop icon Selena Quintanilla-Perez, reveals that she is desperate to get out of prison. According to the Messenger, Saldivar, who is 62 years old and serving a life sentence for the 1995 murder, claims that she doesn’t feel safe behind bars. The prison where she is currently held, the Mountain View Unit in Texas, has been deemed “unsafe and dangerous” in a lawsuit filed by Saldivar in 2017. Former prisoners also confirm that she is a target in the prison, stating that she is “despised” and “the most hated person at Mountain View.”
However, prison staff counter these claims and assure that Saldivar is safe. A former prison guard tells the Messenger that they kept other inmates away from her and put the prison on lockdown whenever Saldivar moved around. “There were credible threats sometimes. But our job is to keep her safe, no matter how many people hate her,” the guard explains. Saldivar is eligible for parole in March 2025, and according to another report from the Messenger, there is nothing on her prison record that would prevent her from seeking release. A relative of Saldivar claims that she has changed significantly since 1995 when she fatally shot Selena after the singer discovered her embezzling $60,000 from her fan club. Saldivar initially claimed that the shooting was accidental and that she had intended to take her own life. (Read more Selena Quintanilla stories.)
