Many argue that President Joe Biden is too old for re-election, but I disagree. The issue isn’t his age, but rather his competence. While watching the film “Book Club: The Next Chapter” with my wife Callista, it occurred to me that we have been approaching Biden’s cognitive problems in the wrong way. The movie, featuring actors and actresses in their 70s and even an 85-year-old star, successfully portrays a light romantic comedy. Additionally, the film serves as a travelogue of Rome, Venice, and Tuscany, which was particularly enjoyable for Callista and me due to our three and a half years living in Rome when she served as the U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See. We have a deep affection for Italy and will watch any movie set in that remarkable country.

Beyond the age debate, I noticed that 85-year-old Jane Fonda displayed remarkable vigor, dynamism, and attractiveness. Although I strongly disagree with her radical views and have never forgiven her for her Hanoi Jane period, I acknowledge her as an American institution who has earned her status through hard work and dedication.

This reminded me of an article I read about Clint Eastwood, who is starting a new movie at the age of 93. Meanwhile, Callista and I recently completed a video series called “Journey to America” featuring interviews with legal immigrants who have enriched our nation with their talent and hard work. We had the privilege of interviewing 100-year-old Henry Kissinger, who is currently working on a new book. These examples demonstrate that age is not a hindrance for achieving great things.

Business tycoon Rupert Murdoch, at 92, continues to run the Fox Empire. Warren Buffett, at 93, remains an active investor. Acclaimed actress Helen Mirren impresses audiences with her performances at the age of 78. At 81, Paul McCartney, one of the wealthiest musicians in the world, continues to tour internationally. Dame Judi Dench, now 88, consistently appears in multiple movies each year.

Even in politics, age is not a limiting factor. Senator Chuck Grassley, who will soon turn 90, was re-elected for his eighth term in the U.S. Senate. Since 1980, he has been serving as a Republican Senator and currently holds the record for being the longest-serving Republican Senator in history. Despite his age, he remains strong in his pursuit of uncovering corruption in the Biden administration and working with whistleblowers.

The examples of these accomplished individuals show that age is not the primary issue. Some people age gracefully and continue to contribute significantly to their field, while others may experience a decline in effectiveness earlier than their peers. Biden’s problem lies not in his age but rather in his abilities.

The truth is, throughout his political career, Biden has consistently displayed a loose relationship with reality, often fabricating stories for his own benefit. His recent false claims about his house almost burning down, as well as his misleading statement to the parents of military personnel who died during the Afghanistan evacuation, highlight his tendency to make things up. Moreover, his cognitive decline is evident and concerning. Watching the leader of the world’s most powerful nation struggle with basic tasks due to confusion and forgetfulness is genuinely frightening.

In conclusion, when discussing Biden’s capacity for re-election, we must not dwell on his age but rather focus on his individual qualities. Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and 2012 Republican presidential nominee candidate, is the chairman of Gingrich 360.
