NEW YORK (AP) — Amazon.com has implemented a new requirement for writers participating in its e-book program. They must now disclose in advance if their work includes artificial intelligence (AI) material. This decision comes after numerous complaints from the Authors Guild and other groups regarding the proliferation of computer-generated books on the platform. Concerns have been raised about AI content potentially overshadowing traditional works and deceiving consumers who are unaware that they are purchasing AI-generated content.
The Authors Guild has applauded this new regulation, which Amazon.com announced on Wednesday. They view it as a positive step towards ensuring transparency and accountability for AI-generated content on the platform. However, it should be noted that Amazon.com will not be publicly identifying books that contain AI content, although they have hinted at the possibility of revising this policy in the future.
In a statement posted on their website, the Authors Guild expressed gratitude towards the Amazon team for considering their concerns and implementing this important requirement. They have been advocating for greater protection and respect for writers in the face of AI-generated material.
According to Amazon’s content guideline page, AI-generated content is defined as text, images, or translations created by AI-based tools. The distinction is made between AI-assisted content, which does not require disclosure, and AI-generated work.
Mary Rasenberger, CEO of the Authors Guild, revealed that discussions with Amazon about AI material have been ongoing since early this year. While Amazon initially expressed the need to carefully consider the issue, the Guild continuously pushed for public disclosure when a work is AI-generated.
In July, the Guild organized an open letter calling on AI companies to refrain from using copyrighted material without permission. Renowned authors such as James Patterson, Margaret Atwood, and Suzanne Collins endorsed the letter.
