Commemorative Series: Uniting in Remembrance for the 22nd Anniversary of 9/11

As the 22nd anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks approaches, cities in western Riverside County are preparing to host flag ceremonies, patriotic reflections, and other commemorative events to honor the victims.

Corona is holding a remembrance service at 5 a.m. on Monday at the Historic Civic Center on 815 W. Sixth St. Representatives from the Corona Chamber of Commerce, Corona Rotary Club, and city officials will be present to stand among miniature flags representing the 2,977 people who lost their lives in the attacks. The names of all those confirmed killed will be read during the three-hour service.

There will be moments of silence at the exact times when the first and second towers were hit in New York City, when the Pentagon was hit, and when Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania after the passengers fought back against the hijackers. The service will continue until 10 a.m., featuring additional ceremonies.

Mt. San Jacinto College will also pay tribute to the heroes who risked their lives to save others on Sept. 11. The college will hold a program at 8 a.m., including an unveiling of a 9/11 artifact, a Veterans of Foreign Wars color guard ceremony, and the display of a flag with the names of the victims. Steve Silva, a survivor of the attacks, will share his experiences being in one of the towers on that fateful day.

In Temecula, a commemorative service will take place at the Duck Pond, near Rancho California and Ynez roads, at 6 p.m. Mayor Zak Schwank will lead the service, which will include a moment of silence and remarks from City Council members and public safety officials.

Murrieta will also hold a tribute at 6 p.m. in Town Square Park, led by Mayor Lisa DeForest and joined by other municipal representatives. However, the city of Riverside will not be hosting any services this year, according to spokesman Phil Pitchford.
