The Atlanta district attorney has taken a bold step in the criminal trials of former President Donald Trump and 18 other defendants by requesting the judge to keep jurors’ names under wraps. This move aims to optimize the secrecy surrounding the Georgia election conspiracy charges.
Fulton County DA Fani Willis has gone a step further in her motion by also urging the court to prohibit the use of courtroom cameras for displaying the jurors and to prevent the publication of any written descriptions of the individuals serving on the jury (source).
Willis strongly highlights the recent incident where the alleged names of the 23 grand jurors who indicted Trump and his co-defendants were exposed. She terms this situation as “doxing,” a practice that involves publicly disclosing personal information with the intention of causing emotional distress or physical harm. To protect these grand jurors, the police were forced to intervene after conspiracy theory websites published their supposed names and home addresses.
In her motion filed in county Superior Court, Willis emphasizes the potential repercussions of doxing on the trial jurors if their names were to become public. She asserts that this foreseeable scenario can significantly jeopardize the jurors’ impartiality and ability to make decisions without external influences. Furthermore, it places the jurors at risk of physical harm and directly infringes upon all defendants’ constitutional right to a fair and unbiased jury.
The defendants in this case, including Trump, are accused of engaging in a broad-ranging scheme to unlawfully overturn his defeat in Georgia during the 2020 presidential election, where President Joe Biden emerged as the victor.
