Musk’s suggestion of a lawsuit for defamation is nothing more than an ’empty threat of a baseless legal action’

The CEO of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), Jonathan Greenblatt, responded to Elon Musk’s recent comments suggesting that Twitter, now known as X, could file a defamation lawsuit against the nonprofit. Greenblatt dismissed Musk’s allegations and described them as a “threat of a frivolous lawsuit.” In a statement to CNBC, Greenblatt criticized Musk’s behavior, calling it dangerous and deeply irresponsible.

Last weekend, Musk claimed that ADL was attempting to undermine X by falsely accusing it and him of being anti-Semitic. He also accused the ADL of pressuring advertisers and causing a significant drop in X’s advertising revenue. Musk warned that X would be left with no choice but to file a defamation lawsuit if the ADL continued to pressure advertisers.

Musk’s control over X has been associated with a rise in hate speech and other inflammatory content. The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) published a report in June, which claimed that X failed to take action against users who posted inflammatory content. In response, X sued CCDH, alleging that the nonprofit obtained data from X unlawfully and produced flawed studies that caused damage to X’s business.

Last week, Greenblatt expressed hope for improvements in addressing hate on X following a conversation with X CEO Linda Yaccarino. However, the hashtag #BanTheADL started trending on X, with some users calling for the nonprofit to be banned from the platform. Musk engaged with anti-ADL posts on X, liking and responding to comments.

Greenblatt criticized Musk for promoting toxic, anti-Semitic campaigns on his platform, which were strongly condemned by various individuals including white supremacist Nick Fuentes, Christian nationalist Andrew Torba, and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. Greenblatt emphasized that the campaign even manifested in a real-world march in Florida, where masked men waved swastika flags and chanted against the ADL.

X has not provided a comment on these events.
