‘The Popular Show, ‘The Great British Bake Off’, Removes Mexican and Japanese Themes for Upcoming Weeks’

The upcoming season of “The Great British Bake Off” promises to be a delightful and enjoyable experience. Executive producer Kieran Smith guarantees that the beloved baking competition show will be “warmer, kinder, sillier,” and one of the best series they’ve ever produced. Smith reveals in an interview with The Guardian that they have taken note of the criticism surrounding the show’s past culturally insensitive theme weeks, such as Japanese Week and Mexican Week.

The goal of these theme weeks was to showcase recipes and baking techniques from different cultures, but unfortunately, they missed the mark and offended many. Smith admits that the jokes fell flat and acknowledges the need for change. As a result, there will be no national themes in the upcoming season.

In previous seasons, the show faced backlash for its portrayal of Japanese and Mexican cuisines, with contestants confusing various Asian cuisines and resorting to lazy stereotypes. These culturally specific theme weeks marred the show’s reputation for sweetness and warmth. To rectify this, the new season will return to its roots with traditional challenges like cake, biscuits, bread, patisserie, and chocolate weeks.

The show’s commitment to diversity is evident in its choice of bakers. While the hosts and judges have primarily been white, the contestants have been a more inclusive group, including bakers of color, queer bakers, disabled bakers, and neurodivergent bakers. This season will feature the show’s first deaf contestant, further showcasing its dedication to representation.

In addition to the changes in themes and contestants, the show welcomes new host Alison Hammond, making her the first person of color to host the show in its 14 seasons. Hammond, an accomplished TV host, sees this opportunity as a significant moment but hopes for a future where diversity is the norm.

The highly anticipated new season of “The Great British Bake Off” will premiere later this month on Channel 4 in the U.K. U.S. viewers can expect it to be available on Netflix shortly after.
