Las Vegas Residents Suffer After Heavy Rainfall Causes Flooding and Rescues
Las Vegas residents are facing the aftermath of two days of torrential rain, resulting in widespread flooding, water rescues, and even a potential fatality. The National Weather Service in Las Vegas issued a severe weather outlook for the region, warning of strong winds and hail as the storm activity moves away from eastern Clark County.
Las Vegas Fire & Rescue reported a total of 24 water rescues, including the rescue of more than 30 stranded vehicles and approximately a dozen individuals saved from standing or moving water.
Tragically, on Saturday morning, the body of an individual believed to have drowned was discovered in north-west Las Vegas. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the person being swept away by the rushing water. Authorities have not yet released the name or cause of death.
Over the past two days, certain areas in and around Las Vegas have received over 3 inches (7.6 cm) of rain, as measured by the Clark County Regional Flood Control District. As a result, Las Vegas has accumulated 3.9 inches (9.9 cm) of rain for the year 2023, exceeding the normal average by 1.2 inches (3 cm) and falling just 0.19 inches (0.48 cm) below the city’s regular annual precipitation.
In response to the flooding, the American Red Cross of southern Nevada has deployed personnel and volunteers to aid affected residents. Working in collaboration with local fire departments and emergency management teams, the Red Cross is offering assistance and support.
This is not the first time Las Vegas has faced flooding this year. Last month, Tropical Storm Hilary caused similar flooding on the Las Vegas Strip and led to multiple water rescues.
Aside from inundating streets and sidewalks in Las Vegas, the heavy rainfall also forced the closure of all lanes on Interstate 15 south of Jean. However, officials announced on Saturday night that the freeway has since reopened.
The downpour also had consequences for the attendees of the Burning Man festival, as access to the Black Rock Desert was cut off due to the wet and muddy conditions. Festival organizers have instructed participants to conserve their resources until the roads are deemed safe. Additionally, an investigation is underway regarding a death that occurred at the festival.
The weather service has issued a flood watch until Monday morning for various parts of eastern and central Nevada.
