Gary Wright, a singer-songwriter renowned for his chart-topping hits “Dream Weaver” and “Love Is Alive” in the 1970s, passed away on Monday morning at his residence in Palos Verdes Estates. He was 80 years old.
Surrounded by his loved ones, Wright spent his final moments at home, battling Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia, which had plagued him for the past few years. News of his demise spread rapidly across social media, as fans and fellow musicians shared heartfelt memories.
Wright, a pioneer in incorporating the synthesizer as a significant instrument in rock and pop music, achieved great success with his solo album “The Dream Weaver” in 1975. Both “Dream Weaver” and “Love is Alive” reached multi-platinum status.
Prior to his solo career, Wright co-founded the British band Spooky Tooth.
In addition to his solo work, Wright collaborated with various artists, most notably George Harrison of The Beatles, as highlighted in his 2014 memoir “Dream Weaver: Music, Meditation, and My Friendship with George Harrison.”
On Monday, singer-songwriter Stephen Bishop paid tribute to Wright on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“I am devastated by the news of my dear friend Gary Wright’s passing…” Bishop stated. “Gary’s vibrant personality and exceptional talent made every moment we spent together truly enjoyable. His legacy will endure for years to come…
“I will forever cherish the warmth and kindness displayed by Gary and his wife Rose, as well as the captivating stories he shared with me about the past,” he continued. “My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and fans during this challenging time.”
