A recent collision near Fort Collins, Colorado, that resulted in eight people sustaining injuries may have been the result of an attempted robbery on the highway, according to authorities. Initially, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office speculated that the crash was prompted by a road rage shooting. However, after uncovering additional evidence, they revised their hypothesis, as reported by Fox 31. The incident occurred when a Kia Sedona van containing eight individuals was forced to halt when an SUV, occupied by multiple masked suspects, cut in front of them on US 287. The suspects proceeded to open fire on the van. In an attempt to escape, the van driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash and ignite in flames.
When emergency responders arrived at the scene, the SUV with the suspects had already fled, according to CBS News. The police are currently seeking information from witnesses and urging them to come forward. While no passengers inside the van were harmed by the gunfire, all the individuals, who happen to be Romanian, sustained minor injuries in the accident. Interestingly, an ambulance dispatched to the crash scene also caught fire, but authorities confirmed that this was due to an engine fire unrelated to the van fire, and no one was injured.
