This message resonates strongly with the Philippines, as both countries are strategic Indo-Pacific coastal states. They share heavy trade exposure with China, their neighboring economic powerhouse, and maintain treaty alliances with the United States. Tensions between these two influential global powers place third countries like the Philippines and South Korea in a difficult position. They must navigate a more complex and turbulent external environment.
South Korea boasts the world’s 13th-largest economy, sixth-strongest military, and ninth-largest arms exporter. It is rapidly becoming a leading defense supplier and envisions becoming the world’s fourth-largest by 2027.
