Obama Wins Emmy Award for Narrating Netflix National Parks Documentary Series on September 3, 2022

Exactly one year ago today, on September 3, 2022, the 2022 Creative Arts Emmy Awards kicked off at the Microsoft Theater. Among the winners of the evening was former President Barack Obama, who took home the award for outstanding narrator for the Netflix documentary series “Our Great National Parks.” Not only did Obama narrate the series, but he also served as one of the executive producers. This Emmy win marked Obama’s first in his career, although he has previously been nominated for three Grammy Awards in the best spoken word album category, winning twice.

In the same category, basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar received a nomination for his narration and interviews on the History documentary “Black Patriots: Heroes Of The Civil War.” Abdul-Jabbar, who also served as an executive producer on the project, was previously nominated in the category in 2020. Other nominees included W. Kamau Bell for the Showtime documentary “We Need To Talk About Cosby” and Lupita Nyong’o for the Discovery+ wildlife series “Serengeti II.”

RuPaul continued his winning streak by taking home the award for outstanding host for a reality or competition program for the seventh consecutive year. This victory solidified RuPaul’s place as the most decorated host in the category since its establishment in 2008. Coming in second with four wins is “Survivor’s” Jeff Probst.

The late actor Chadwick Boseman, known for his role as T’Challa in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, won the award for outstanding character voice-over performance for reprising the role in the Disney+ animated series “What If…?” Boseman, who tragically passed away from colon cancer in 2020, received his first Emmy nomination posthumously. Another posthumous nominee in the same category was Jessica Walter, who was recognized for voicing Malory Archer on the FX animated comedy “Archer.”

Maya Rudolph, who had won the category for the past two years, was aiming for a third victory for her portrayal of Connie the Hormone Monstress on the Netflix animated series “Big Mouth.” Julie Andrews also received her second consecutive nomination for lending her voice to the anonymous newsletter columnist Lady Whistledown on Netflix’s “Bridgerton.”

Among the nominees was Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham, who provided the voice of Khonshu in the Disney+ Marvel Cinematic Universe series “Moon Knight.”

“Arcane,” a Netflix series set in the League of Legends video game universe, clinched the award for outstanding animated program. Competing against acclaimed shows like “The Simpsons,” “Bob’s Burgers,” and “Rick and Morty,” this win showcased the rising popularity of the League of Legends franchise.

The night’s top winners were the CBS concert performance “Adele: One Night Only” and the Disney+ documentary series “The Beatles: Get Back,” both receiving five Emmys. “Adele: One Night Only” was honored for its outstanding variety special, lighting design, sound mixing, technical direction, camerawork, and directing. “The Beatles: Get Back” secured wins for outstanding documentary series, directing, sound editing, picture editing, and sound mixing.

In addition, “Arcane” took home four Emmys, including three for outstanding individual achievement in animation. The Super Bowl LVI halftime show was recognized as the outstanding live variety special, production design, and music direction.

It’s important to note that to be eligible for an Emmy, programming must have premiered between June 1, 2021, and May 31, 2022. The awards in 48 categories for scripted programming, including cinematography, costuming, hairstyling, makeup, picture editing, as well as outstanding television movie and guest acting, will be presented on Sunday. A condensed version of the two ceremonies will be televised on FXX on September 10 and available for streaming on Hulu from September 11 to September 27. The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, featuring the top 25 categories in comedy, drama, competition, limited series, variety sketch, and talk series, along with the Governors Award, will take place on September 12 at the Microsoft Theater.
