President Joe Biden, in front of a home ravaged by a fallen tree, graciously acknowledged that the extent of the damage could have been far worse.

“This area hasn’t experienced winds this powerful in a century,” stated Biden during his visit to Live Oak, Florida. “Let’s hope and pray it takes at least another hundred years for something like this to happen again.”

Accompanied by First Lady Jill Biden, President Biden traveled to Florida to assess the impact of Hurricane Idalia and meet with affected communities and recovery personnel. He has instructed the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to exhaust all resources in assisting with the rebuilding process.

Hurricane Idalia, a Category 3 storm, made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region on Wednesday, resulting in extensive power outages and severe flooding. To address the urgent need, the White House has urged Congress to allocate $16 billion in interim funding to replenish FEMA’s depleted disaster relief fund, which is projected to run out by mid-September. During his visit to Florida, President Biden reiterated his call for swift action from Congress.

“These crises are increasingly affecting Americans nationwide, and it is our collective expectation that FEMA be prepared to provide assistance whenever required,” emphasized Biden. “I urge both Democrats and Republicans in the United States Congress to ensure the necessary funding is available.”

Initially, President Biden intended to meet with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, whom he has been in frequent contact with following Hurricane Idalia. In fact, on Thursday, Biden jokingly remarked, “We should have a direct hotline.” However, on Friday night, Jeremy Redfern, a spokesman for Governor DeSantis, stated that the governor did not anticipate a meeting due to security concerns hampering ongoing recovery efforts.

While on his way to Florida, FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell clarified that the White House and the governor’s office had previously agreed on the location for President Biden’s visit, and there were no security concerns raised at that time or before Governor DeSantis’s office released their statement.

Despite their political differences, Biden highlighted his close communication with DeSantis during the entire storm and its aftermath, acknowledging the governor’s proactive efforts.
