Los Angeles County’s public health director, Barbara Ferrer, addressed the slight increases in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations during a media briefing. However, she reassured the public that they can still safely enjoy the upcoming Labor Day weekend as long as they follow common-sense safety precautions. She emphasized that there are no new safety measures or restrictions being announced at this time.
Ferrer did suggest that it would be a good idea to wear well-fitting, high-filtration masks on public transit and in healthcare settings due to the slight rise in transmission. The county has seen a daily average of about 571 new COVID-19 cases, double the number from four weeks ago. However, Ferrer mentioned that these numbers are likely an undercount since they don’t include home tests.
The county also has an average of about 521 COVID-19 related hospitalizations per day, which is higher than a month ago but still significantly lower than previous surges. Emergency room visits related to COVID-19 have also increased from 3% to 5% in the past month.
Ferrer pointed out that there hasn’t been a corresponding increase in deaths, with the county reporting an average of one death per day. This could be due to the lagging nature of deaths as an indicator or the positive impact of vaccinations and therapeutics on reducing the risk of severe illness or death. However, the percentage of deaths associated with COVID-19 has increased from the past two weeks, indicating a possible trend.
Despite these slight increases, Ferrer reassured residents that officials are closely monitoring the situation. As people prepare for the Labor Day weekend, she advised them to follow basic safety measures, including wearing masks based on individual preference and following masking requirements in specific situations. Ferrer also encouraged testing after exposure or the development of symptoms.
