Court upholds Backstreet Boy Nick Carter’s defamation countersuit against alleged sexual assault victims

Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter, known for his success in the music industry, recently won a favorable ruling in one of the two civil lawsuits filed against him in Nevada. One lawsuit stems from an allegation made by a woman who claims Carter raped her on his tour bus in Washington state back in 2001. The other lawsuit came from a woman who alleges Carter sexually assaulted her on his boat in Florida in 2003.

In the first case, which was filed in December by a now 40-year-old Nevada woman, Carter and his attorneys brought a countersuit alleging defamation by three individuals. The judge ruled that the countersuit should not be dismissed. The woman in this case alleges that Carter attacked her on his tour bus when she was just 17 years old. She claims that Carter threatened her, stating that she would go to jail if she told anyone about the incident, based on his fame and power.

The second case, filed recently in Clark County District Court, involves allegations made by a woman claiming that Carter raped her on his yacht in 2003 when she was only 15 years old. Carter, who currently resides in Las Vegas, denies all allegations of sexual battery and infliction of emotional distress made by both women. Both women are seeking unspecified monetary damages exceeding $30,000.

During the court hearing, Carter appeared with his attorney, and Judge Nancy Allf declined to dismiss his counterclaim against three individuals whom he accuses of defamation, conspiracy, and abuse of process. Carter is seeking over $2.3 million in damages. His attorney, Liane Wakayama, stated that Melissa Schuman and her father have been conspiring for years to profit from false claims against Nick Carter. Schuman had previously lost a bid in California in 2018 to have criminal charges filed against Carter based on her allegation of forced sex in his Los Angeles-area apartment. Carter maintains his innocence regarding this accusation.

Attorney Alan Greenberg, representing the Schumans, argued in court that Carter is a public figure and that Schuman reported the sexual assault to two friends and a therapist in 2003. The defense claims that the Schumans did not make their allegations public until 2017, following the #MeToo movement, and further asserts that they “recruited” the woman who accused Carter of sexual assault in Florida.

The Backstreet Boys, formed in 1993, are renowned for their hit songs such as “I Want It That Way,” “As Long as You Love Me,” and “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back).” Despite these ongoing legal battles, Carter continues to deny the allegations against him. This case serves as a reminder of the challenges victims face when speaking out about abuse and seeking justice.
