Opinion: The Relevance of Journalism in Today’s World

August 30 marked the 173rd birth anniversary of Marcelo H. del Pilar, famously known as Plaridel, the father of Philippine journalism. Plaridel, along with his fellow writers and coeditors in Spain, where they published La Solidaridad in 1889, can be considered as patriotic propagandists. However, they were also writers who utilized the power of words to enact necessary changes in their home country. Writing, although not the oldest profession, has been a part of human history for centuries, evident in ancient scriptures, tales, and historical records passed down through various mediums such as sheepskin, stone tablets, papyrus scrolls, and even walls. In today’s terms, these would be considered different platforms.

One example of ancient writing is the Bible, which serves as the basis for many people’s beliefs. Modern journalism, as we comprehend it today, is relatively young, with a history of around two to four centuries. As practicing journalists, we adhere to ethical standards, undergo training and exposure, and sometimes face challenging and life-altering experiences. For many of us, journalism is not just a career but a calling.

In a book titled “Journalism: Why It Matters” by Michael Schudson, Sheila Coronel, a colleague from Columbia University, shared her insights on the importance of journalism. Schudson emphasizes the significance of original reporting that holds governments accountable, whether done by reporters, photographers, documentary filmmakers, bloggers, podcast creators, or anyone following the norms and practices of professional journalism. He distinguishes this type of journalism from pseudo or fake journalism, focusing on professional accountability reporting as its greatest contribution.

Schudson traces the evolution of this form of journalism, from journalistic interviewing in the late 1800s to its formal professionalism and the establishment of journalism schools by Walter Williams and Joseph Pulitzer. He believes that professionalism in journalism entails understanding what qualifies as news, how to verify it, and how to present it. Additionally, he highlights the importance of storytelling, as journalists aim to connect with readers or viewers emotionally. Accuracy is paramount in journalism, and Schudson advocates for meticulous fact-checking.

Schudson also mentions the “aim for the heart” test, a standard that editors like Letty Jimenez Magsanoc of the late Inquirer wanted stories to pass. Journalism encompasses various forms, such as assertive, compelling, accountability, watchdog, investigative, contextual, and analytical reporting. Technology also plays a significant role in shaping the field.

In conclusion, Schudson asserts that journalism matters in our complex world. By signing our names to our work, we have the power to make a difference.
