Stepsister Reveals Deceased Individuals in Rocky Mountains Were Seeking Society Escape

  • A hiker made a gruesome discovery in July when they stumbled upon three bodies near a remote Rocky Mountain campsite.
  • The stepsister of one of the deceased individuals revealed that the group had fled into the wilderness due to their struggle to adapt to societal changes.
  • Unfortunately, the group lacked the necessary survival skills to sustain themselves off the grid.

DENVER (AP) — The stepsister of a Colorado woman who was found dead, along with her sister and teenage son, at a remote Rocky Mountain campsite, reveals that the women sought refuge in the wilderness due to their struggles with societal changes in recent years. However, their lack of preparation made survival off the grid impossible.

According to the recently released autopsies, Christine Vance, Rebecca Vance, and Rebecca’s unidentified son likely succumbed to malnutrition and hypothermia as they faced snow, subzero temperatures, and a shortage of food at their campsite.

The autopsies also unveiled a heartbreaking detail—Rebecca’s 14-year-old son was found with his stepsister Trevala Jara’s cherished and blessed rosary—signifying that a glimmer of faith accompanied them in their final moments.

Trevala Jara, struggling with grief, questions their decision to abandon her: “Why would you choose to do this, knowing that it would leave me behind? Why didn’t you listen to me and my husband?”

A passing hiker discovered the campsite and the teenager’s body in July. The Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office subsequently located the bodies of the two women when they investigated the scene and opened the tent. The campsite displayed empty food containers and survival books, while a lean-to structure extended near a firepit nearby.

The sisters, who resided in Colorado Springs, had been planning their escape from society since the fall of 2021, attributing their decision to the negative impact of the pandemic and politics on humanity.

Trevala Jara emphasizes that they were not conspiracy theorists but rather individuals who believed that the world was spiraling towards its demise, prompting their desire to isolate themselves from society’s influence.

Rebecca Vance is remembered as an intelligent individual, reserved yet quick-witted, capable of completing voluminous books within days. As for her son, he excelled in homeschooling and possessed exceptional mathematical abilities.

Christine Vance, on the other hand, was more outgoing and charismatic. Initially skeptical about the idea of escaping society, she ultimately changed her mind to ensure her sister and nephew wouldn’t be alone.

Although they informed others of their plans to handle a family emergency in another state, they intentionally withheld the specific location of their campsite from Trevala Jara. They relied on YouTube videos to prepare for their wilderness adventure, but their inadequate preparation proved fatal.

Trevala Jara confesses that she exhausted every effort to dissuade them from leaving, resorting to drastic measures to no avail. Now, she wishes to caution others about the dangers of survival in the wilderness:

“I wouldn’t wish this upon anybody. I long for the day when I can find happiness and only remember the memories.”
