Mother of Soccer Boss Initiates Hunger Strike, Requiring Hospitalization

The mother of the Spanish soccer official currently under investigation for kissing a player at the Women’s World Cup has been hospitalized after embarking on a hunger strike as a form of protest against the allegations made against her son. Angeles Bejar took refuge in a church in Motril, southern Spain, on Monday, stating that the relentless and vicious pursuit of her son is completely unjust. According to the BBC, Bejar had announced that she planned to continue the hunger strike indefinitely. However, she has now been admitted to a hospital in Motril, the same town where Luis Rubiales, president of the Spanish Football Federation, was raised, as reported by Reuters.

According to a priest, “She had been feeling unwell due to the heat and various other factors. Her feet had become swollen, and she was extremely fatigued. She was also experiencing heightened nervousness.” Despite mounting pressure for his resignation following the controversial kiss, Rubiales has adamantly refused to step down. He maintains that the kiss was consensual, while Jenni Hermoso, the player involved, firmly states otherwise. The United Nations Human Rights office recently voiced support for Hermoso, emphasizing the importance of calling out and challenging sexual harassment and abuse, as reported by the BBC.
