Cebu Pacific, the largest airline in the Philippines in terms of market share and fleet size, is currently in talks with Boeing, the US planemaker, for the potential acquisition of narrow body airliners. This move would mark a significant departure from its exclusive use of Airbus aircraft for the past two decades. The airline is also considering establishing an operations hub at the New Manila International Airport being constructed by San Miguel Corp. in Bulacan as part of its expansion plans.
An airline executive revealed that Cebu Pacific’s executive leadership team met with Boeing in Seattle to explore the B737 fleet as a response to disappointment with Airbus’ delays and supply chain issues with engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney. The Gokongwei family-controlled airline, which has been operating solely Airbus aircraft since retiring its Boeing 757 narrowbody airliners in 2006, realized that the cost of relying on a single manufacturer outweighs the savings.
The Gokongwei family-controlled airline’s high-ranking executives who visited Boeing’s manufacturing facility in Washington included President Xander Lao, CEO Michael Szucs, CFO Mark Cezar, CMO Candice Iyog, and VP for Customer Service Operations Lei Apostol.
Cebu Pacific plans to utilize the upcoming Bulacan airport as its next operating hub, alongside Ninoy Aquino International Airport. The airline intends to refleet its narrowbody aircraft based on the establishment of a large base in Bulacan and will choose between Boeing and Airbus depending on the best deal.
By expanding its options and exploring talks with Boeing, Cebu Pacific is adopting a new strategy to diversify its fleet and reduce its reliance on a single manufacturer. This strategic move not only addresses the recent frustrations with Airbus and Pratt & Whitney but also positions the airline for future growth and flexibility.
