82-Year-Old Pat Corrales, Manager of Three Prominent MLB Teams, Passes Away

Pat Corrales, a former Major League baseball manager and coach, passed away at the age of 82 in his home in the north Georgia mountains. He managed the Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians, and Philadelphia Phillies before joining the coaching staff of the Atlanta Braves under Bobby Cox. Corrales, who was of Mexican descent, was the first MLB manager of Mexican heritage.

The Los Angeles Dodgers confirmed his death. Corrales had been working in the Dodgers’ front office since 2012, serving as a special assistant to the general manager.

Although Corrales had a relatively unremarkable playing career as a backup catcher with four teams, he became more well-known for his contributions in his post-playing career. He made his only postseason appearance as a player with the Cincinnati Reds in the 1970 World Series.

Corrales made history as the first Mexican-descended manager in the MLB when he took over as the interim manager for the Rangers in 1978. He went on to manage the Rangers for two full seasons and then became the manager of the Phillies in 1982. Despite achieving a record of 89-73 in his first full season with the team, he was fired during the middle of the following season, even though the Phillies were in first place in the National League East. The team’s general manager took over and led the Phillies to the World Series.

Corrales then joined the Cleveland Indians as their manager for five seasons, from 1983 to 1987. After his tenure in Cleveland, he became a coach for the Atlanta Braves from 1990 to 2006, during which the Braves experienced great success with a record 14 consecutive division titles and a World Series championship in 1995.

In his later years, Corrales worked as a coach for the Washington Nationals and briefly served as a coach for the Yankees in 1989. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Donna Myers Corrales, as well as his two daughters and son.

Overall, Pat Corrales was a highly respected figure in the world of baseball, known for his deep knowledge and passion for the game. He will be remembered for his contributions as a player, manager, and coach throughout his career.
