Graduate Student from University of North Carolina Accused of Murdering Faculty Advisor – Orange County Register

A first-degree murder charge has been filed against Tailei Qi, a graduate student at the University of North Carolina, for the fatal shooting of his faculty advisor, Zijie Yan. The attack prompted a campus lockdown as authorities searched for the gunman. In addition to murder, Qi is also charged with possessing a 9mm handgun on educational property. Yan, an associate professor in the Department of Applied Physical Sciences, had been with the university since 2019. The university is offering support and assistance to Yan’s family. Qi was listed as a graduate student in Yan’s research group on the university’s website. Qi was arrested during a three-hour lockdown following the shooting. Brian James, the UNC Police Chief, expressed the need to understand the motives behind the incident and to prevent such events from recurring on campus. Qi is currently being held without bail. The shooting occurred in Caudill Labs and led to a widespread lockdown as students and faculty sought refuge. Police arrested Qi based on witness information. The lockdown was lifted and classes canceled the following day. The incident has caused shock and damage to the university community’s sense of trust and safety. Yan led the Yan Research Group, where Qi had been a member since last year. Qi is a graduate student studying nanoparticle synthesis and light-matter interaction. He moved to the US from China after completing his undergraduate degree in physics at Wuhan University. The shooting occurred just a week after the start of the fall semester, causing fear among students.
