CDC data reveals that Covid is responsible for a mere 1% of total weekly deaths in the US due to all causes

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Covid was responsible for only 1 percent of weekly deaths from all causes in the US. In the week ending August 19, there were 324 Covid-related deaths, accounting for just 1.7 percent of the total deaths that week. This is a significant decrease compared to the pandemic peak in 2021, when one in three deaths were attributed to the virus.

The data reveals that Washington, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, Maryland, and New York have higher rates of Covid-related deaths, with Maryland and Florida having the highest rate at 3.4 percent. Washington, Tennessee, North Carolina, and New York have rates hovering around 2 percent. On the other hand, more than two dozen states reported only one to nine deaths due to Covid in the week ending August 19.

Analysis of the data also shows that the death rate is slightly higher among women than men, and the highest death rates are observed in individuals aged 75 and older.

Although panic surrounding the highly transmissible new Covid variants is rising and leading to more infections and hospitalizations, the number of Covid deaths is not increasing rapidly. New variants such as EG.5 (Eris) and BA.8.26 (Pirola) have been detected in several countries, including the US. These variants are more mutated and appear to be better at evading vaccine and natural immunity, resulting in more infections. Despite the rise in infections, hospital admissions remain at near-historic lows.

Some organizations and institutions, like Rutgers University, Morris Brown College, Kaiser Permanente Hospital, and Upstate Community Hospital, have reinstated mask mandates to combat the spread of the virus. However, there is limited interest among Americans to receive Covid booster vaccines, with only 18 percent of eligible individuals having received any version of a booster.

In conclusion, while the number of Covid cases is increasing due to new variants, the percentage of Covid-related deaths remains low. It is essential to continue practicing preventive measures like wearing masks and getting vaccinated to protect against the virus’s spread.
