Colt McCoy released as Cardinals’ QB Kyler Murray starts 2023 NFL season on PUP list

During training camp and preseason, Murray has been on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, allowing him to fully recover from his ACL injury and surgery that ended his 2022 season prematurely. Considering the timing of his injury, it’s likely that Murray will miss more than a month. In fact, there are reports suggesting he could be out for half of the 2023 season.

With Murray sidelined, the Arizona Cardinals find themselves in a less than ideal quarterback situation. However, it’s still a captivating scenario. McCoy was initially expected to be Murray’s replacement, but the team decided to release him. To address this, the Cardinals acquired Dobbs through a trade with the Browns. Dobbs previously worked with Drew Petzing, who currently coordinates the Cardinals’ offense. Despite Dobbs’ limited time with the team, the Cardinals seem confident enough to move forward with him or Tune, who also saw preseason action with McCoy.

“It was a tough decision,” Gannon said about releasing McCoy. “Colt is a phenomenal professional and has had a long career in the NFL. Having been in this situation before, it’s challenging. We understand the sacrifices and hard work that these players put into their craft. Ultimately, if we’re honest with them, they appreciate it. They know we’re doing what’s best for the team. These are difficult days.”

Dobbs has experience stepping into an offense and quickly adapting. Last season, Tennessee signed him from Detroit’s practice squad and named him the starter for Week 17 and 18, just two weeks after joining the team.

These skills may once again be necessary for Dobbs to assist the Cardinals until Murray is back.
