Country superstar Dolly Parton playfully declined Kate Middleton’s invitation for tea, suggesting that meeting the princess wouldn’t have helped boost her record sales.
In an interview with BBC Radio 2’s Sally Boazman, Parton revealed that the Princess of Wales wanted to meet her during her recent visit to London.
“This time, Lordy, they’ve got me. I even got invited to have tea with Kate, and I felt so bad. I couldn’t even go,” said Parton to Boazman.
Parton expressed her appreciation for the sweet gesture, saying, “I thought that it was very sweet and nice of her to invite me to tea, and one of these days, I’m going to be able to get to do that. That would be great.”
However, the singer-songwriter couldn’t resist injecting some humor into the situation and jokingly explained why she had to decline the tea invitation.
“But she wasn’t going to promote my rock album, so I had to say no,” laughed Parton.
This wouldn’t have been Parton’s first encounter with a member of the British royal family. She met the late Queen Elizabeth II back in 1977.
“As a child, I was fascinated by the kings and queens and their flamboyant clothes, living in a world of riches, crowns, and jewelry,” shared Parton in an interview with Insider in February.
“I was scared I wouldn’t know how to curtsy properly, but she was warm and sweet, and I could tell she was a very generous person. Just meeting the Queen of England, simply meeting a queen, was amazing,” added Parton.
