Extra-inning thriller sees Guardians defeat Blue Jays 10-7

In a thrilling 11th inning, Kole Calhoun’s two-run double and Ramon Laureano’s two-run homer propelled the Cleveland Guardians to a 10-7 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. This win allowed the Guardians to claim the series victory in front of a crowd of 41,978 at Rogers Centre.

Unfortunately, the Blue Jays suffered some setbacks during the game. Shortstop Bo Bichette left in the fourth inning due to a tight right quadriceps ailment, while third baseman Matt Chapman departed after the sixth inning with a swollen right middle finger.

With two outs, Calhoun unleashed a powerful hit that sailed over Toronto right-fielder George Springer, giving the Guardians the lead. Laureano then followed with a two-run homer to left-center field.

Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase allowed the Blue Jays to score one more run through Whit Merrifield’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning.

Blue Jays rookie Davis Schneider had an impressive game, hitting a two-run blast in the sixth inning and doubling in the eighth to give the home team a 5-4 lead.

Pinch-runner Kevin Kiermaier replaced Schneider and scored the tying run on Daulton Varsho’s single to right field.

In the eighth inning, Andres Gimenez hit a two-run double down the line, putting the Guardians ahead 6-5.

The Blue Jays initially took a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s home run to left field. However, the Guardians quickly tied the game with Jose Ramirez’s two-run shot in the third inning.

Cleveland added two more runs in the fourth inning, with Calhoun and Laureano playing key roles.

Tyler Freeman’s single and Myles Straw’s hit allowed Calhoun and Laureano to score, increasing the Guardians’ lead.

Springer contributed to the Blue Jays’ offense, hitting a home run in the fourth inning and making a spectacular diving catch in the right-field alley to prevent Ramirez from getting an extra-base hit.

In other news, Toronto reliever Erik Swanson was placed on the 15-day injured list due to thoracic spine inflammation. Swanson exited the game on Saturday after experiencing discomfort in his right mid-back.

Jay Jackson was called up from Triple-A Buffalo to replace Swanson in the bullpen.

The Blue Jays will conclude their homestand with a three-game series against the Washington Nationals, with Kevin Gausman facing Josiah Gray in the opening match.
