Recap of Browns vs Chiefs Game (Aug 26, 2023): Chiefs Grab Close Victory 33-32

Kansas City, Mo. — Deshaun Watson acknowledges that there is still work to be done before the start of the season, but he is optimistic about the progress he has seen so far. Despite a rough start in the Browns’ preseason finale against Kansas City, Watson eventually settled down and led Cleveland to touchdowns on his next two drives. Although the Chiefs ultimately came back to win the game, Watson believes that dealing with early adversity was a valuable learning experience for the team.

The Browns’ defense also had a strong showing, with pick-6s from Juan Thornhill and Caleb Biggers, giving Cleveland a 29-16 lead. However, the Chiefs mounted a comeback and secured the victory with a late field goal.

Regarding his performance, struggling Browns kicker Cade York expressed frustration with his recent struggles, including missed extra points and field goals. Despite receiving encouragement and support from others, York is determined to overcome these challenges.

Watson had limited playing time in the previous preseason games, so coach Kevin Stefanski decided to give him the entire first quarter against Kansas City. Stefanski was pleased with what he saw from Watson, who finished the game with 5 completions on 10 attempts for 92 yards and a touchdown pass to David Njoku.

Both teams chose to rest their starters in the preseason finale, resulting in a matchup between backups. Unfortunately, the game took a toll on the Browns, with Jakeem Grant Sr. suffering a significant knee injury and Denzel Ward entering the concussion protocol. Other players, including Jordan Elliott and Jordan Kunaszyk, also sustained injuries.

For the Chiefs, backup quarterbacks Shane Buechele and Blaine Gabbert had mixed performances, with Buechele throwing two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown by Thornhill.

Despite the turnovers, the Chiefs’ coach, Andy Reid, recognized some positives from the game but emphasized the need to reduce mistakes and turnovers.

In terms of players’ availability, the Browns chose to rest key individuals like Myles Garrett, Nick Chubb, and Joel Bitonio throughout the preseason. The Chiefs also sat out starters such as Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.

Injury-wise, the Browns had multiple players sidelined, including Jack Conklin, Jerome Ford, Grant Delpit, Marquise Goodwin, and Anthony Schwartz. The Chiefs dealt with injuries to Leo Chenal, Kadarius Toney, and L’Jarius Sneed.

The Browns will open the regular season against AFC North rival Cincinnati on September 10, while the Chiefs will face the Lions in the NFL’s season opener on September 7.
