A tragic incident of gun violence unfolded at an Oklahoma high school, resulting in the loss of one life and injuries to at least four individuals on August 25. The chaos of the situation was captured in a broadcast video from the game, showing the desperate scramble for safety among the crowd.
The shooting occurred during the third quarter of a game between Choctaw High School and Del City High School, following an altercation between two men on the visitor side of the stadium, as reported by the Choctaw Police Department.
In a news release, the police stated that a total of three people were shot during the incident. Sadly, a 16-year-old boy who was not a student at either school lost his life. The police also confirmed that a 42-year-old man and a “young female” sustained gunshot wounds but are currently in stable condition.
Additionally, two girls, believed to be students, were injured amidst the ensuing chaos. One suffered a broken wrist, while the other suffered a broken leg, according to the authorities.
The broadcast footage obtained from a local ABC affiliate, WFAA, depicted the terrifying scene as hundreds of people panicked and sought cover, with shots ringing out in the background. The announcers themselves expressed confusion and concern as the crowd scattered in different directions.
As the football teams quickly evacuated the field, several individuals remained lying flat on the ground, attempting to avoid gunfire. The tense situation led to an announcement over the stadium’s public address system, instructing everyone to take cover.
The suspect in the shooting is still at large, and the Choctaw Police are actively searching for him. According to a police release, a person of interest is described as a man wearing red sweatpants.
In relation to the incident, it was revealed that one Del City police officer fired their weapon. The Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office will lead the investigation into this “officer-involved shooting,” while it remains unclear whether the officer’s shots resulted in any injuries.
The Del City Police Department, in a news release, confirmed that two off-duty Del City officers were present as security guards during the game, with one of them discharging their service weapon.
Insider’s request for comment from the Oklahoma County Sheriff and the Del City and Choctaw Police Departments has not received an immediate response.
