Garrett Wilson catches a touchdown pass from Jets QB Aaron Rodgers in preseason finale

Aaron Rodgers demonstrated his accuracy right from the start, completing his first three passes despite facing intense pressure from the Giants’ aggressive defense. Despite the Giants resting their starters, their defensive coordinator Wink Martindale didn’t hold back, giving the Jets’ offensive line, potentially featuring their Week 1 starting unit with Duane Brown at left tackle and Mekhi Becton at right tackle, a challenging test.

In a crucial third-down situation early in the game, Rodgers faced a strong blitz from Isaiah Simmons, the Giants’ recent trade acquisition making his debut for the team. Forced out of the pocket and tripped up by Oshane Ximines, Rodgers had no choice but to throw the ball away.

However, Rodgers quickly regained his composure when he received the ball in excellent field position at the Jets’ 48-yard line. Despite an overthrow to tight end C.J. Uzomah, Rodgers remained unfazed. He benefitted from a 22-yard pass interference call against the Giants’ defense, and two plays later, he connected with his target, Wilson, on a 14-yard touchdown. Even with tight coverage from Gemon Green, Rodgers adeptly maneuvered with a quick drop, a flick of the ball off his back foot, and a precise throw that sailed past Green’s right ear and into Wilson’s waiting hands.

According to NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo, the original plan was for Rodgers to have “two or three” series of play before handing off the reins to Zach Wilson. Although Rodgers only played for a total of nine snaps (or ten if the penalty is included), his performance, highlighted by the touchdown pass, signaled the end of his night.

All in all, it was an encouraging debut for Rodgers. We eagerly await his next appearance in Week 1, where he will face the Buffalo Bills in a highly anticipated Monday night matchup.
