The Marlow family captured media attention last year when doctors mistakenly pronounced Ryan brain dead following a sudden bout of listeria and a resulting hemorrhagic stroke. Megan, in an interview with Insider, revealed that doctors informed her about Ryan’s unresponsiveness and “neurological death,” even going so far as to record an official time of death on his certificate.
As an organ donor, Ryan was kept on life support until suitable matches could be found. However, moments before the scheduled organ procurement, Ryan displayed movement in his toes, prompting Megan to demand further tests.
A subsequent CT scan demonstrated blood flow in Ryan’s brain, revealing that he was not brain dead but rather in a coma. The organ procedure was canceled just minutes before it was set to commence.
It has now been nearly a year since Ryan first fell ill and six months since his return home to Wilkesboro, where he continues his recovery journey alongside Megan and their three children.
In a recent interview, Megan shared the challenges they have faced during the past six months, including insurance battles and infections, as well as moments of triumph. Ryan’s rehabilitation progress at home has been remarkable. He has regained some mobility, even kicking a ball with his left leg, which previously had little to no movement.
“He’s exhibited such incredible strength over the past two months,” Megan said. “It’s truly awe-inspiring.”
Despite ongoing difficulties with swallowing and the need to rely on a feeding tube, Ryan communicates through sign language and nods his head in response to yes-or-no questions. Megan also mentioned that Ryan planned a beautiful anniversary date for her, which included flowers, dinner reservations, and a gift card for a new outfit.
“He made such an effort to make it special,” Megan shared. “We dressed up and enjoyed our time together, even though he couldn’t eat.”
To commemorate their anniversary, Megan created a slideshow showcasing their 17 years together, evoking tears of joy and gratitude within the entire family as they reflected upon their journey and the challenges they have overcome.
Despite moments of frustration and sadness due to Ryan’s inability to speak or communicate fully with his children, Megan remains optimistic. Ryan’s goals for the next year include walking with assistance and working towards regaining his speech. The support they have received from the community has been invaluable.
“I’ve asked him if he feels anger, and he always says no. He believes that God has a purpose and plan for everything,” Megan revealed.
