Luis Rubiales Praised by Coaches for Not Resigning Following an Unwanted Kiss

  • FIFA has suspended Luis Rubiales, the chief of Spain’s soccer association, following a public kiss that a player claimed was non-consensual.
  • Jenni Hermoso, the player involved, stated that the kiss was forced, and her teammates have supported her.
  • Despite the controversy, powerful figures in the sport are standing by Rubiales and applauding his decision not to resign.

In the midst of a scandal involving a powerful man’s non-consensual kiss on a female soccer player, one aspect that stands out is the support he receives from other men in the industry.

During the celebration after Spain’s victory in the Women’s World Cup final, Luis Rubiales, the President of the Spanish Football Federation, forcefully kissed star player Jenni Hermoso on the lips.

The incident sparked outrage among fans worldwide. Hermoso made it clear that she did not give her consent for the kiss.

Rubiales, 46, dismissed the incident as a “peck” and accused “false feminists” of targeting him. He described the kiss as an innocent celebration, similar to the affection he shows his own daughters.

Despite Hermoso receiving support from female soccer players around the globe, Rubiales received applause from predominantly male coaches and officials at an emergency meeting when he refused to resign over the incident.

However, some of those who initially supported Rubiales have since retracted their endorsement. Luis de la Fuente, the coach of Spain’s men’s national team, publicly condemned Rubiales’ behavior.

In response to the controversy, the Spanish women’s national team has pledged to boycott matches until Rubiales is removed from his position.

In light of the backlash, FIFA has provisionally suspended Rubiales for 90 days.
