Analysis of the Celta Vigo versus Real Madrid Game (Aug 25, 2023): Real Madrid Secures a 1-0 Victory

Jude Bellingham, the new addition to Real Madrid, displayed his prowess in the second half by scoring a crucial goal that secured his team a third consecutive victory in LaLiga. Their 1-0 triumph over Celta Vigo on Friday ensured that they maintained a flawless start.

At just 20 years old, Bellingham once again demonstrated his attacking brilliance for the Spanish giants, finding the back of the net for the fourth time in his first three league games. This accomplishment came after Rodrygo failed to convert a penalty earlier in the second half.

Real Madrid faced an early setback when Brazilian forward Vinicius Jr. had to leave the pitch due to a leg injury after only 15 minutes. This loss is significant for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, especially considering the injuries to goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and defender Éder Militão.

Ancelotti commented on Vinicius Jr.’s injury, saying, “Vinicius felt some discomfort, so we made the decision to substitute him. We’ll assess his condition over the next few hours. He experienced some muscle discomfort in his leg.” The manager doesn’t believe the injury to be serious, stating, “He wanted to continue…I think he’ll be back after the international break. It’s unfortunate because he started the season well and seemed unstoppable.”

This is the first muscle injury the left-winger has encountered. Prior to this, he scored 28 goals and provided 19 assists for Real Madrid since the beginning of last season.

In spite of the injuries and the departure of Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema to the Saudi Pro League, Ancelotti affirmed that Real Madrid is satisfied with their current squad and will not be pursuing further signings. He said, “Our squad is complete. If we can win matches even without Courtois, Militao, Karim, and Vinicius, it demonstrates the strength of our team. They have performed admirably.”

Celta Vigo also had to make a substitution just before halftime due to Franco Cervi’s injury.

The opening moments saw Celta Vigo initially celebrate what they thought was a goal, only for VAR to disallow Jorgen Larsen’s effort due to a foul on goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. This match marked Arrizabalaga’s debut after his loan move from Chelsea. Ancelotti praised his performance, stating, “Kepa played well, and keeping a clean sheet is a positive sign. He deserved to play, and I’ve mentioned before that we have strong goalkeeping options, both with Kepa and (Andriy) Lunin.”

In the 68th minute, Rodrygo had a golden opportunity to give Real Madrid the lead with a penalty kick, as he was tripped by keeper Iván Villar inside the box. However, Villar redeemed himself by diving to his right and saving Rodrygo’s spot kick.

Talking about the penalty, Ancelotti expressed his disappointment, saying, “I told Real midfielder Fede Valverde that Luka Modric should take the penalty. I’m not sure what happened between them that led to Rodrygo being chosen. It’s a bit frustrating that Luka didn’t take it.”

Nevertheless, midway through the second half, English midfielder Bellingham put Real Madrid, the current leaders of La Liga, in the lead with a header from Joselu’s assist from a corner. Ancelotti praised Bellingham’s performance, stating, “Bellingham is performing exceptionally well. He keeps scoring because he moves intelligently without the ball. He arrives at the perfect moment.”

Following three consecutive away matches, the high-flying Real Madrid team will finally play their first home game next Saturday against Getafe, as the renovations at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium draw to a close.
