Their responses were mixed. Some firmly believe in the September Surge. Laurie Chamberlin, Head of LHH Recruitment Solutions in North America, who has been in the recruiting industry for over two decades, attests to its reality. She explains that after Labor Day, companies and employees wrap up their summer plans and shift their focus to hiring, aiming to finish the year on a strong note. September and October are ideal because people are back in the office, and there is ample time to onboard new hires before the end of the fiscal year.

Another factor contributing to the September Surge is budget planning. Many companies begin budgeting for the following year around this time, and they assess their goals for the current year. If there are funds available in the current year’s budget that won’t be allocated for new hires in the next year, companies are motivated to fill those positions before the year ends. Chamberlin emphasizes that the September Surge will be at its peak during Labor Day week but may slow down closer to Thanksgiving when companies focus more on year-end bonuses and holiday time off.

While the September Surge may bring some increase in job opportunities, economists believe that the best month for hiring is yet to come. Supporters of the September Surge acknowledge that it may not be a significant shift in the market but rather a modest increase. The data from job board sites indicates that any surge in job openings during September is primarily observed in seasonal retail and sales positions. January remains the busiest month for hiring across industries. According to LinkedIn’s principal economist Guy Berger, January is followed by June, likely due to students entering the job market, and August sees the most entry-level hiring.

Nonetheless, job seekers can still take steps to make their application stand out. Bonnie Dilber, a recruiting manager, advises applying early, networking, being flexible with interview times, and connecting their expertise to the company’s mission during interviews. Dilber emphasizes that being an early applicant gives a significant advantage.

While the September Surge may or may not result in increased job openings for desired roles, job seekers can use the end of summer to prepare themselves for the job search. Berger suggests using September as a time to get ready and start applying to position oneself for the hiring spikes in the new year.
