Sierra Madre Canyon Residence with a Sea Ranch Ambiance Seeks $1.7 Million – Orange County Register

A magnificent Sierra Madre residence, perched on a hillside lot that captured the hearts of its former owners, is now available for purchase. With an asking price of $1.698 million, this stunning home, known as “Cedarhawke,” spans 2,612 square feet and showcases the timeless elegance of Sonoma County’s Sea Ranch. Boasting two bedrooms and three bathrooms, this abode is a genuine treasure.

The exterior of Cedarhawke is adorned with weathered cedar cladding, which perfectly complements the modernist architecture of the home. Ample windows and spacious decks offer breathtaking views, stretching from the surrounding canyon to the magnificent San Gabriel Valley and even out to Catalina Island on clear days. It’s truly a sight to behold.

The story behind Cedarhawke is as enchanting as the home itself. Carolyn and Harry Gravatte, high school sweethearts, stumbled upon the hillside location back in the 1940s. Little did they know that years later, after nearly three decades and the birth of their two children, fate would lead them back to this very spot. To their surprise, they discovered a “For Sale” sign on the property. Standing on the peak together, Harry declared, “This is where I’m going to build my house.” And so, in 1976, the Gravattes acquired the lot and embarked on their dream of constructing their perfect home.

Despite limited funds, the Gravattes collaborated with a talented local architect who was willing to accommodate their financial constraints. They paid as they went, taking on the challenge of building their dream house alongside their day jobs. Carolyn, a skilled artist and sculpture teacher, and Harry, a precision machinist, dedicated themselves to the construction. Their love and commitment extended to every corner of the house, from the wooden spiral staircase, which Harry meticulously crafted at night, to the tiniest details like hidden love notes scribbled on the drywall.

The interior of Cedarhawke is equally remarkable. The entryway opens onto a stunning staircase that leads to the spacious living room, complete with a soaring ceiling and a freestanding fireplace. Another set of stairs guides you to the dining area and a pristine all-white kitchen, featuring top-of-the-line stainless steel appliances, tiled countertops, and a convenient peninsula island with a cooktop and ample storage. The hallway leads to two bedrooms, including the luxurious primary suite, which boasts a glass-enclosed shower, a separate tub, and a sliding glass door that opens up to an extended deck, offering endless views.

One of the home’s most unique features is the spiral staircase, lovingly built by Harry Gravatte himself. Ascending the stairs leads you to a bright and airy artist’s loft, which can also serve as a third bedroom if desired. This loft showcases the perfect space for creative endeavors. Continuing up the spiral staircase takes you to the five-car garage and shop, where Harry restored his beloved cars, including a 1961 Ferrari Lusso and a 1949 MG TC. In addition to his automotive hobbies, Harry ran a post-retirement business from the shop, recreating and selling vintage parts for classic cars, historic homes, cameras, guitars, and Telefunken microphones.

Tragically, Harry Gravatte passed away in July 2020 at the age of 87. Despite her loss, Carolyn continued to reside in Cedarhawke until her passing in May at the age of 91. Now, their daughter, Laura Wambsgans, believes it’s time for a new owner to cherish the home her parents built, describing it as a true work of art. As an artist herself, Laura understands the beauty of creating something that brings joy to others every day. She feels that Cedarhawke should be passed on to someone who will appreciate its unique charm.

Jan Greteman and Katherine Orth of DPP are the listing agents for this extraordinary property. Cedarhawke is not just a house, but a testament to love, dreams, and the art of craftsmanship. Don’t miss the opportunity to make this magnificent residence your own.
