Identification Made of Gunman in Cook’s Corner Shooting Resulting in Fatality; Critical Condition Remains for Two Victims

A retired sergeant from the Ventura Police Department was responsible for a tragic shooting at a bar/restaurant in Trabuco Canyon, according to Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes. The gunman, identified as 59-year-old John Snowling, shot his estranged wife and then began randomly firing into the crowd. Snowling knew that his wife would be at the establishment, as they were going through a divorce. The woman survived the shooting and was reported to be conscious and talking to her son. Two other individuals, including a woman dining with Snowling’s wife, were fatally shot. Snowling arrived at the bar armed with three handguns and a shotgun. When sheriff’s deputies arrived, an exchange of fire occurred, resulting in Snowling’s death.

The Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer stated that his office will review the shooting, but believes the deputies’ actions were justified and heroic. Four individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, while six others were taken to the hospital, with two in critical condition. Snowling’s wife, Marie Snowling, was initially listed in critical condition, but was later transferred to UCI Medical Center. Cook’s Corner, the bar where the shooting took place, is a well-known establishment. Although historically known as a biker bar, it is also a family-oriented restaurant, particularly on spaghetti nights.

Despite the tragic incident, officials and community members emphasized the resilience and significance of Cook’s Corner. Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his condolences and urged the public to take advantage of red-flag laws to prevent similar incidents. Senator Dave Min and Congresswoman Katie Porter, both representing the affected area, expressed their sadness over the shooting and emphasized the need to end gun violence.

Overall, the shooting at Cook’s Corner is a tragic event that has deeply impacted the community, but efforts are being made to support the victims and prevent future incidents.
