Cook’s Corner Shooter, Described as a Mentally Unstable Former Police Officer, Allegedly Had Wife as Target – Orange County Register

A retired sergeant from the Ventura Police Department has been identified as the culprit responsible for a tragic incident at an Orange County biker bar. John P. Snowling, 59, opened fire at Cook’s Corner bar, killing three individuals and injuring six others. Snowling was later confronted by Orange County Sheriff’s deputies and died in the parking lot.

Marie Snowling, the estranged wife of John Snowling, was his primary target and was shot in the lower jaw. She has been taken to UCI Medical Center for treatment. The identities of the other victims have not yet been released.

Records reveal that Marie Snowling filed for divorce in December 2022. In an interview, her father, William Mosby, described John Snowling as an unhinged spouse who couldn’t handle the divorce.

John Snowling served as a licensed private investigator with the Ventura Police Department from November 11, 1986, to February 28, 2014. He retired as a sergeant and possessed a state firearms permit that expired in 2017.

The incident at Cook’s Corner occurred during the popular $8 Spaghetti Night. Marie Snowling was attending the event, as she did every week. The biker bar was hosting two birthday parties and had a band performing when the shooting took place, causing panic among customers and staff.

Two members of the M Street pop band were shot but are expected to survive. Band member Debbie Johnson described the atmosphere at the bar as a joyful gathering celebrating birthdays. Johnson and her husband sought refuge behind speakers when they saw the gunman firing at individuals just a few feet away.

Despite the chaos, the band initially believed the gunshots were part of a birthday prank and continued playing. Social media posts showed a significant response from law enforcement and emergency personnel.

One eyewitness, Betty Fruichantie, shared videos and photos on Facebook depicting the bloody aftermath at Cook’s Corner. She expressed gratitude for narrowly escaping harm, as shots were fired in her direction.

Cook’s Corner, known for its cold beer and good food, advertises itself as a family-friendly biker bar and restaurant. It is considered one of Southern California’s most renowned establishments in this category.
